Autumn in Arrowtown is an explosion of colours and a feast for your senses
Experiencing autumn in Arrowtown is a magical experience and is arguably our favourite time of yea. With vibrant hues of red, orange and yellow lighting up the hillside, it is a photographer’s dream. From March to May, the events calendar is filled with festivities including the famous Arrowtown Autumn Festival. The weather is mild so locals and visitors make the most of this and get outdoors and bike, hike, golf or relax in the autumn sun and still long(ish) days.
What to expect
Autumn is from March to May and the temperature ranges from 5 – 20ºC. While most days are warm, the evenings are crisp. The weather is mostly dry during autumn but it is best to wear layers which can be taken off or added to easily (merino wool layers are great for warmth and are lightweight).
If you are planning to hike, bike or run in the trails, pack additional layers and a waterproof jacket as the weather can change quickly. Look at the weather conditions first, bring water and snacks, wear appropriate shoes, and tell someone about your plans. If you are venturing into the mountains, take a personal locator beacon (PLB) with you. Arrowtown locals love the dramatic colours of autumn and come together to celebrate the season at the Arrowtown Autumn Festival, a 5-day event with activities for all ages. Throughout autumn, many eateries and bars also offer seasonal menus utilising autumnal produce and host live music and other events.
While the ski fields aren’t open in autumn, the bike season is still underway at Coronet Peak and Cardrona which both offer a thrilling biking experience and incredible scenery alongside it.

Iconic events
The golf courses surrounding Arrowtown are also bustling with novice and practiced golfers, and every March the course at Millbrook is home to the New Zealand Open, an iconic international golf tournament. Another iconic March event is Motatapu, an off-road sporting event for both elite athletes and weekend warriors.
